Atera alternative

CubeMSP compared with Atera

Deliberately simple and priced for growth.

What Atera actually is

Atera bundles remote monitoring, remote access, a helpdesk and reporting into a single platform licensed per technician with unlimited devices. Its market position is straightforward and consistent: simplicity and predictable cost, with a fast route from signup to productive use. For small providers and internal IT teams that is a coherent proposition and it has won a substantial customer base on those terms. The considerations are the natural consequence of the position - the business layer is lighter than a dedicated PSA, and recurring service management and client-facing reporting are the areas providers most commonly outgrow.

Credit where it is due

What Atera does well

These are the real reasons it has the customers it has. If two or more of them describe something you need, weight them heavily.

  • Quick to adopt: productive in days rather than weeks.

  • Per-technician pricing with unlimited devices makes cost predictable as client estates grow.

  • Monitoring, remote access and helpdesk in one place, with no integration to maintain.

  • A clear and consistent product position, which is rarer and more useful than it sounds.

Side by side

The differences that actually change the decision

Not a feature checklist. These are the structural differences - licensing, scope, who implements it - that determine whether a system fits, and they are the ones nobody tells you until month four.

Worth checking

Questions to put to them before you sign

None of these are faults. They are design decisions with consequences, and every one of them is answerable - so ask.

  • The business layer is intentionally light

Contracts, recurring service margin and client commercial management are thinner than a dedicated PSA offers. That is a deliberate product decision rather than a gap, but it is the thing providers most often outgrow.

  • Client reporting is technical rather than commercial

Reporting is oriented towards device and ticket data. Turning it into a quarterly review that a client’s finance director finds persuasive remains manual work.

  • Knowledge management is basic

There is somewhere to put documentation. There is no mechanism that causes the documentation to exist, which is the actual problem in most MSPs.

  • Aimed at smaller teams

Positioned for small providers and internal IT. Growing firms with complex recurring books and formal client governance typically need more on the commercial side.

When Atera is the better choice

If you are a small team wanting monitoring, remote access and a helpdesk quickly and cheaply, Atera is a sensible answer and CubeMSP is not competing for that. Some providers keep Atera for the technical side and add CubeMSP for the commercial side, which is a legitimate arrangement rather than a compromise - and if your recurring book is simple and your clients do not expect formal reviews, you may not need the second product at all.

If you do move

What leaving Atera actually involves

  1. 1

You may not need to switch anything

Atera can stay as the RMM and helpdesk for the technical work while CubeMSP handles clients, recurring services, renewals, projects and reviews. Several providers in this position run both deliberately.

  2. 2

Rebuild the recurring book with cost and sell

This is where the margin visibility comes from, and it usually needs restructuring rather than copying.

  3. 3

Bring the ticket history if you move the desk

If the service desk does move across, the history matters more than the open tickets, because it is what the knowledgebase is built from.

Questions

What people ask when comparing us with Atera

  • Yes, and for some providers that is the right answer. Atera handles monitoring, remote access and the technical desk; CubeMSP handles clients, recurring services, renewals, projects and client reviews, with alerts flowing across through the API.

  • You can, and most providers who adopt CubeMSP fully do, because splitting the queue across two systems makes the reporting from both unreliable. But it is a choice rather than a requirement.

  • Renewal and margin visibility on the recurring book, a knowledgebase that populates itself, client-visible project boards, and quarterly reviews that assemble rather than being built. If none of those is a current problem, adding a second product is not yet worth it.

  • No. Atera is deliberately fast to adopt and we are deliberately configured around your service catalogue, taxonomy and review templates. Expect six to twelve weeks including migration.
